The benchmark 30-year
fixed-rate mortgage fell 7 basis points to 6.42 percent, according to the
Bankrate.com national survey of large lenders. |
The mortgages in this
week's survey had an average total of 0.36 discount and origination points. One
year ago, the mortgage index was 6.31 percent; four weeks ago, it was 6.5
percent. |
Pending home sales
collapsed in August, according to the National Association of Realtors, which
blamed the drop-off more on problems in the mortgage market than on economic
fundamentals. The Realtors' pending home sales index is an indicator for what
will happen over the next few months in the housing sector. |
